Fake News and Challenges to Journalism on Eastern Standard

Host John Hingsbergen chats with Dr. Pamela Parry of Eastern Kentucky University Communications and Joel Pett, political cartoonist at the Lexington Herald-Leader about challenges to journalism.

We’ve been hearing a lot about “fake news” and “alternative facts” lately. Some folkssay these are symptoms of challenges to journalism.

Dr. Pam Parry: Chair for EKU’s Department of Communications, Associate Professor of Public Relations at Eastern Kentucky University.

Parry earned her PhD in Communication with an emphasis in Media History and in Public Relations in 2013. Her dissertation research explored the public relations philosophy of the Eisenhower Administration, and her research interests include public relations history and presidential communications.

Joel Pett:  Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist for the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Pett's cartoons have appeared in hundreds of newspapers and magazines nationwide, including the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Boston Globe.

Al Cross: Associate professor in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications at the University of Kentucky and Director of the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues, and spent more than 26 years as a reporter at The Courier-Journal, the last 15½ as the Louisville newspaper's chief political writer.
